Mesh or Solid Michigan Inground Pool Cover. What’s the Difference?

As we discussed in our Inground Pool Covers Part 1, there are several types of pool covers to choose from. If you’re wondering what the differences are between mesh and solid pool covers, we can help you out. Read on to hear what our Michigan pool experts have to say:

Mesh Pool Cover Pros

The biggest pro to a mesh pool cover is it allows rainwater to pass through. Since you don’t need to worry about water seeping into your pool from above, there’s no need for an extra pump on top of the cover. This also means that you don’t have to run around filling up your pool every time it rains. Mesh safety covers are also less expensive than solid vinyl covers because they lack the bottom side panels and other features of vinyl pool covers. The price difference between the two is $200-$600, depending on size.

Another advantage of mesh over solid vinyl is how easy they are to use—and take off! Mesh doesn’t require any pumps or motors because it simply lets water flow into your swimming area. You can also easily remove and store these types of covers when not in use since they’re made from lightweight materials. Simply take the cover off each fall before winter sets in; and put it back on when spring arrives again.

Mesh Pool Cover Cons

In addition to the benefits listed above, mesh pool covers allow some sunlight to pass through. While this is great for your pool water’s clarity and health, it can also lead to algae growth on the cover and in your Michigan inground pool. Cleaning algae is more difficult than solid covers and can take additional time in spring when opening your pool.

Solid Pool Cover Pros

Solid pool covers are made of solid material that doesn’t allow light to pass through, which means you won’t see any sunlight coming through the cover in the spring. When it comes to cleanliness and water retention, solid swimming pool covers are one of the best options for your inground pool. Solid covers do not let sunlight into your swimming pool, so algae growth is kept to a minimum during the winter months. While this may seem like an inconvenience at first glance, it does make opening much easier when you get ready for summer.

Solid Pool Cover Cons

Solid pool covers require maintenance throughout the winter, as debris must be swept or pumped off. If you have a solid safety pool cover, it is likely that your weight restrictions will be less than those of a mesh safety cover. If you are vigilant and remove the debris from your solid pool cover, it can still provide excellent protection against falling leaves and other elements that could damage your swimming pool.

Both mesh and solid pool covers have advantages and disadvantages. The choice is ultimately up to you but be sure to weigh all your options before deciding. If you need additional help choosing a Michigan inground pool cover, give the experts at Blockco Pools a call.
