How to Clean your Michigan Inground Fiberglass Pool

Michigan inground fiberglass pools are easy to clean and maintain since they are manufactured in a single, ready-to-install piece and have a non-porous gel coating.  This doesn’t mean you should skimp on the regular cleaning though.  It’s important to know the basics of inground fiberglass pool cleaning and maintenance, so you can enjoy a clean pool all summer long.  Our experts recommend taking care of the following.

Water Chemistry

Make sure to test and maintain your inground pool water at least 2-3 times per week for basic chemicals.  Testing your pool is easy and simple to do with a test kit you can get at your local pool company.  When testing, make sure to do the following:

• Use a test kit from a local pool company that measures the sanitizer, pH, and total alkalinity levels in your inground pool.
• Get your water samples from ~18 inches below the surface and look for a spot opposite of the jet.
• Test for the calcium hardness, cyanuric acid, and metals on a monthly basis.

Michigan Pool Cleaning

Similar to all pools, the best way to clean your Michigan inground fiberglass pool requires brushing, skimming, and vacuuming.  Because the fiberglass has a gel coating covering its entirety, you should brush and vacuum at least once per month and skim the water as needed.  When cleaning your pool, it’s best practice to:

• Use nylon brushes so you don’t scratch the fiberglass pool’s surface.
• Skim the water any time you find leaves and debris floating in your pool.
• Brush away dirt and debris from the sides and bottom of the pool to help with filtration.
• Vacuum the pool to remove large dirt and debris from the bottom of the pool.

Surface Maintenance

If you begin to notice a noticeable ring around the pool wall – there’s a solve for this!  This ring often develops because of body oils and suntan lotions and can easily be removed by applying a non-abrasive cleaner.  Just make sure you use a nylon brush when cleaning the surface of your pool, so you don’t scratch the surface.

Water Level

It’s easy – and important – to check you water levels on a regular basis.  Keep your Michigan pool’s water level in the center of the skimmer plate and adjust the water level accordingly.  If you keep your water level too low, it could result in a damaged pump; if too high, it reduces the effectiveness of your skimmer.  And if you must drain your Michigan pool for any reason – contact your local Michigan pool professionals.  Most inground pools can be damaged by incorrectly draining the water due to the ground pressure.
